This replica of the lantern found onboard the Hunley represents yet another lingering mystery surrounding the legendary submarine. Each official Hunley lantern replica comes numbered and certified. Hunley lore tells us the crew was to signal to shore if they achieved their mission. Comrades on land would then light a fire to help guide the Hunley safely back to shore. Both Union and Confederate records mention seeing lights the night the Hunley disappeared. During excavation of the crew compartment, a lantern was found in the Captain’s station. Was it used to provide the prearranged signal or just used to light the inside of the submarine while the crew cranked it into world history? Either way, the lantern serves as an important part of the Hunley story and will ultimately help archaeologists piece together why she did not return home that night. Measures approx. 8-1/2" tall by 5-1/2" wide (including lens and handle).

It looks good on the shelf next to my model of the Hunley. Glad to know I have a First Edition numbered and signed Certificate of Authenticity.
